Stagecoach Ayrshire District League
A DAZZLING double form veteran hitman John "Hoots" Harvey saw a highly impressive Winton side sink their North Ayrshire rivals to chalk up their ninth victory out of 12 to further bolster their promotion hopes.
The memorable triumph saw the table topping Winton extend their advantage over second placed Largs Thistle to four points and they are now 14 points ahead of Vics although they have played four more games than Willie Reddick's side.
Winton deserved victory as they were the hungrier team while Vics were well short of their best and must know they can play better.
Fired up Winton got off to a perfect start with just eight minutes on the clock, Harvey sending home a glancing header from 18 yards following a corner kick from Mark McCann.
However Vics came desperately close to levelling midway through the first half when a Rod Lennox drive rocketed off the crossbar.
The home side equalised in 30 minutes after the interval. A right foot shot from Lennox was saved by visiting goalkeeper Stuart Robertson, but Robin "Spider" Jamieson pounced to thunder the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.
Winton got their second goal of the game in 70 minutes when Harvey sent an 18 yard rocket soaring into the top corner of the net.
Vics thought they had pulled a goal back when Robin Jamieson was adjudged to be offside after he knocked the ball home from close range although he appeared to be onside.
But the Ardrossan club held on for a vital victory which confirms their credentials as leading promotion contenders.
