WINTON'S WINNING WAYS

Ardeer Thistle 0
Ardrossan Winton Rovers 2

Stagecoach Ayrshire District League

WINTON maintained their winning start to the season with a hard fought win over battling Ardeer.

Rovers have now taken full points from their first three league games but they didn't have it all their own way at a blustery Ardeer Stadium.

Paul Monan almost gave the home side the lead on ten minutes when he fired wide from the edge of the box after leaving two Winton defenders for dead.

At the other end Hoots Harvey came close to opening the scoring but his eight yard drive was brilliantly saved by Paul McCann in the Ardeer goal.

But midway through the half McCann could do nothing to stop the visitors taking the lead as Scott Clelland converted a Graeme Muir cross with a shot from inside the box. Ardeer almost levelled the match on the half hour mark with a speculative Billy Thomson drive from 50 yards but Stuart Robertson had it covered.

On 35 minutes Robert Workman stopped Harvey from doubling the Winton lead with a fine last ditch tackle.

But just before the break the visitors went further ahead when Muir broke throught the Ardeer defence to finish with ease.

The home side went all out to save the match and looked the better side at the start of the second half. Joe Creamer came close on two occasions within five minutes of the restart but Rovers were resolute at the back despite a high wind that caused both defences unease.

There was plenty of effort but little in the way of goal mouth incident for the rest of the half.
