Stagecoach Ayrshire District League
WINTON went into this crucial league match knowing that nothing less than victory would be enough to keep their slim hope of promotion alive.
As it turned out, apart froma brief spell in the first half, they never looked like achieving their objective.
Annbank started well enough and in the first minute Ian Connelly sent Craig Main clear but his shot was too high.
Winton came more into the game and kept Annbank pinned in their own half but never really brought Stewart Best into action.
Stephen Wilson broke down the right but the Annbank defence charger down his parting effort.
The game was a rugged affair with no quarter being asked or given and with the tackles flying in by both sides someone was going to be picked on and that man was Steph McMillan who was booked after 30 minutes.
Two minutes later Winton almost took the lead. A free kick wide on the left was driven in by Daniel Connolly and it flew across goal and wide of Best's left hand post.
Five minutes later it was Annbank who came close to opening the scoring, but Scott Whalen's cross cum shot flashed across the goal and wide.
The home side took the lead on the stroke of half time Whalen made ground down the right and Michael McCann headed his pinpoint cross into the net.
Straight from the kick off Winton made tracks for the home goal and only a fine clutch by Best from a Scott Weir cross cleared a dangerous situation.
Ardrossan replaced John Boothman with Ross Halliday at the interval.
Annbank had a chance to go two ahead two minutes after the interval but Steven White shot well over.
A bad refereeing blunder in 11 minutes gave Annbank a second goal. With the Winton linesman clearly raising his flag for a throw in, the referee missed the flag and Winton won a corner. The referee acknowledged he had missed the flag at this point. The corner was cleared upfield and Michael McCann out paced Colin Yair into the penalty area where he was brought down. Whalen scored from the spot.
Ardrossan could not get back into the game despite having a lot of the ball and Annbank always looked dangerous when they attacked.
The third goal arrived 18 minutes from time, good work by Stephen Crichton down the right ended with a neat cut back to McCann who steadied himself before shooting into the net.
With 15 minutes left Winton introduced Hoots Harvey up front in place of Scott Weir but the veteran striker made little impression on the match.
The scoring was completed nine minutes from time when Stephen Crichton ran through from what appeared to be an offside position and gave Stuart Robertson no chance.
