ROVERS DEFEAT THE SEASIDERS

Saltcoats Victoria 0
Ardrossan Winton Rovers 3

Rockware Glass Cup Section Two

SALTCOATS must be asking themselves what went wrong in the second half of this match.

They fell apart to a Winton team who had been under the cosh to almost complete Saltcoats possession in the first half.

Salcoats who had a slim chance of qualifying for the latter stages of this tournament got on the offensive right away when John Nolan flicked the ball over the Ardrossan defence to find Thomas McClelland.

He beat Daniel Connelly and his shot had Stewart Robertson diving to his left to touch it away.

Colin Frye then had his name taken for dissent after 14 minutes. Soon after a Nolan free kick again had Winton under pressure when it went into the side netting from 22 yards.

Gary Gillhoully then had a nice try when his shot from 18 yards reflected off Scott Crawford and trickled just wide, out of the reach of Robertson.

Good hold up play by McClelland wide on the right gave Saltcoats another chance. He then beat Connelly and crossed to find Nolan, whose shot from the edge of the area was held by Robertson.

Next it was the turn of Simon Eeles to have a go when his shot, after he had turned inside Connelly, came rattling back off the post in the dying minutes of the first half.

Winton must have been grateful for surviving the opening period and still on level terms.

The seasiders on the other hand were about to paydearly for there missed chances.

Nolan had the first good run of the second half when he found Gillhoully with a cross and the latter's header was easily taken by the goalkeeper.

With 53 minutes gone Ardrossan took the lead when Neill McVicar ran wide on the right and crossed in to the middle of the area to Crawford.

His point blank shot was parried by Robert Syme in the Saltcoats goal but the ball ran into the path of Ross Halliday, who blasted home.

Saltcoats then had a reshuffle with Ray Montgomerie and Ricky Ryland replacing Steart Robertson and Gillhoully.

Just after the hour though, Winton had theri lead doubled when Paul Templeton had a great shot drilled home from 15 yards to give Syme no chance.

Winton continued to dominate the match and it was no surprise when Templeton beat the offside trap with 10 minutes to go. He ran in on Syme and slipped the ball under his diving body to make it three.

A good win for the progressive Ardrossan, but Vics must be wondering just exactly what went wrong after the break.
