OVD Scottish Junior Cup - Round 1
LANARK manager Tam McDonald, who has a great Scottish Cup pedigree as player and boss of Auchinleck Talbot, plotted the downfall of a woeful Winton team on Saturday.
Rovers made things easy for the Central Division 2 League leaders by failing to "turn up" in what Ardrossan manager John Redmond considered their worst display of the season.
On a grey day the cup tie lacked any sparkle and the first action took ten minutes when a Lanark free kick was headed past the post by Bryson.
Winton's first real effort also came from a free kick in 17 minutes but Mark McCann's shot rebounded from the wall.
Then a 20th minute corner by McCann was headed over the bar by Hoots Harvey.
It was a half of set pieces and ex-Glenafton defender Colin Slater almost put Lanark ahead in the 23rd minute with a free kick which flashed low past the target.
The goal was only delayed a minute and it came from a right wing cross which bobbled about the Rovers box before Lanark captain Craig Stark rifled the ball to a corner of the net.
It could have been two when another right wing cross saw Winton defender Boothman head netwards but fortunately keeper Stuart Robertson saved on the line.
Rovers' top scorer Scott Clelland had not been involved in the tie until he showed his danger with a volley over the bar in the 35th minute.
In a downpour at the start of the second half Winton had a chance when Scott Weir connected with a Clelland cross but keeper Smith dived to save.
However, Lanark went 2 up in 57 minutes when a corner was met by Stark to head his second goal as the home defence spectated.
Young striker Paul Templeton came on for Winton who had to go for goals but it was the defenders who were all at sea again as Gary McGrotty raced clear and Robertson mde a good blocking save.
Shortly after McGrotty was sent off for his second yellow card.
Against ten men Winton put on another attacker in Ross Halliday for the final 20 minutes but it was curtains in 76 minutes when Slater rose high for another corner and Bryson got the final touch.
For some strange reason Rovers were awarded a penalty in the 86th minute and Harvey scored a consolation, but once again the defence was torn apart down the right wing and a cross found sustitute Williamson who scored a forth.
There were no pass marks for Ardrossan players although Graeme Muir and Scott Weir worked hard for 90 minutes.
WINTON: Robertson, Boothman, Yair, Cuthbert, Easton,
McCann,
Clelland, Crawford, Weir, Muir, Harvey.
