WONDERFUL WINTON

Ardrossan Winton Rovers 4
Ardeer Thistle 1

Rockware Glass Cup Section Two

ROVERS fought back from a goal down to cruise past a young Ardeer outfit.

John Hoot Harvey was the first to show for Winton with a good turn and shot, while on 11 minutes a move set up by Scott Clelland saw Craig Shanaghey almost finish off only for Gordon Traynor to nip the ball over the bar.

Following this corner a nice move by McCann and Muir saw a chipped ball to the back post where Billy Easton rose well to head against the bar, and Scott Crawford hit a drive that went over.

Harvey was impressing and did well down the left on 15 minutes, putting in a low cross that Muir initially did not connect fully with, although Clelland saw his low drive cannon of the far post.

On 25 minutes Ardeer took the lead against the run of play when McGulp danced his way into the box from the right and managed to hit a low drive into the far corner of the net.

Winton were stung by this after all their pressure and were on level terms after 28 minutes when Harvey did well at the near post and sent a cross in from six yards to give Clelland the easiest of tasks to score.

Stuart Boyd then forced a good save from Stuart Robertson in the Winton goal before Rovers hit the bar again on the half hour mark, Crawford rising to meet a corner only for the woodwork to get in the way.

However, on 35 minutes Winton went ahead when Harvey collected a long throw-in, fed Crawford, who then set up Shanaghey at the back post to score with ease from three yards out.

Winton were stroking the ball about well and a good move on the right saw the ball fall again to Shanaghey and he hit his low drive just past the post. McCann then passed up another good chance when he got free in the inside left channel but saw his low shot just miss.

Ardrossan went into the second half in the same vein as the first and a free-kick by McCann on 48 minutes picked out Shanaghey. He leapt to steer a header inside the near post to extend Winton's lead to 3-1.

Mullen of Ardeer showed his skill on 52 minutes when he latched onto a long throw and hit a great shot that brought the best out of Robertson.

On 64 minutes Harvey almost got the goal that his display merited when he saw a flashing header come off the bar from a corner.

Mullen again forced a great save from distance from Robertson in the Winton goal on 70 minutes before Ardrossan's fourth. And it was Harvey who got his debut goal for new club when he rounded Traynor and stroked the ball into the empty net.

Ardeer tried manfully to reduce the deficit but substitute David Hyndman had a couple of great chances towards the end of the game to make it more emphatic for Winton as he got round Traynor but just couldn't prod the ball into the empty net.
