North Ayrshire Cup - Semi Final
RELEGATED Buffs can look forward to a repeat of last season's final against holders Beith after this hard fought victory against a stuffy Winton.
It took Paul Wright's side only three minutes to make the breakthrough. Ayr United bound striker Ian Cashmore went on a solo run and saw his dangerous cross headed over the bar by the Winton defence.
The corner by James Donnelly was met at the near post and Cashmore flicked the ball home.
In 23 minutes home player Tommy Sloan Jnr got clear on the left and did well to beat two Kilwinning defenders before cutting inside, but his curled shot was saved by Robert McGoogan in the Buffs goal.
The game was interuppted when Hoots Harvey and Kevin Biggart collided. The veteran Winton striker suffered a badly gashed knee and had to be replaced.
Winton were by no means overwhlemed and five minutes into the second half a good sweeping move saw Ross Halliday get on the end of a pass but his shot drifted wide of the post.
Buffs extended their lead in 72 minutes when a dangerous cross from Dylan Kerr was spectacularly headed home by Winton's Danny Connelly for an own goal.
Buffs had wrapped the game up at this stage and the icing on the cake for them was a dubious looking penalty with five minutes to go when Billy Easton slid in on Armstrong and seemed to get the ball first. But the referee decided otherwise and substitute Charlie Adams stepped up to net the spot kick.
