Largs' Brolly Good Show

Largs Thistle 5
Ardrossan Winton Rovers 1

Rockware Glass League Cup

INDISCIPLINED nine man Winton crashed to defeat against a Thistle side who moved into top spot in the section with John Redmond's side now having conceded ELEVEN goals in their opening two matches.

Largs fought out a dull scoreless draw in April against Winton, but this was anything but. Indeed could have racked up double figures in a dominant performance.

The Adrossan side had an early opportunity to open the scoring with Alan Shanks heading wide at the right post following a well directed cross from the left.

The first goal had a real look of quality about it as new boy John Robertson delivered a prompt pass to release Jamie Marks down the right. His perfectly drilled cross was met with aplomb by Young who slammed the ball in at the top left hand corner from ten yards.

Marks then galloped clear down the left and put a cute chip over the outrushing keeper from five yards out, but the ball agonisingly cut by the left post.

Marks was again close to scoring after a dangerous swerving cross from out on the left. His downward header was blocked by the keeper and winger Mark McManus blazed the rebound across the face of goal from an acute angle.

Brian Robertson received a yellow card after Largs conceded a penalty which was confidently converted by Sean Quinn in 33 minutes to level the match.

Thistle did not waste any time though and regained the lead just a minute later thanks to a David Brolly header from a corner kick.

Marks promoted cheers from the terracing after one particular good move down the left when he sidestepped a few strong challenges.

Thistle went further ahead before the interval as Kean linked up with Brolly who fired home from five yards.

Gordon Reid sent in a bending drive that resulted in a solid stop from visiting keeper Stuart Robertson

Andy Kean nearly produced a moment of magic as he had a glorious one two with Brolly. Swiftly moving into the box from the right wing, he met the through ball with a crashing volley which bounced wide of the left post.

Daniel Connelly was ordered off following dissent for Winton. Visiting player Henderson was then sent off for Rovers following a rammy in which Paul Young was floored following a late challenge. There was widespread anger as Winton coach Hoots Harvey was also given his marching orders.

Winger Mark McManus provided the late, late show for Largs with two goals in the final five minutes of play. He finished off a good move with some skill with a close range blast on 85 minutes.

One of the unsung heroes of the team, McManus completed the rout on 88 minutes with afine finish and certainly deserved his moment of glory.

It was a comprehensice win for a Largs outfit who were in charge throughout this derby encounter. Keeper Connick was rarely troubled but showed awareness, palming one dangerous long range lob over the bar.

Largs look in good shape for the season to come, especially considering they were missing several of their first team regulars from last season.
