Thistle War with Rovers

Ardeer demand points back following Winton complaint

ANGRY ARDEER THISTLE have appealed against the decision to dock them three points for fielding two ineligible players after ARDROSSAN WINTON ROVERS made a protest to the SJFA about their Three Towns rivals.

Winton's claim, understood by Sportscene to be the Thistle fielded tow Australian players without international clearance in a Stagecoach Ayrshire District League game on September 30, was upheld at the SJFA West Region monthly meeting in Glasgow last Tuesday. Beaks deducted three points from Ardeer (who won the game 2-1) with the goals for and against from the game also being wiped out.

However the decision has been set aside pending appeal after the Stevenston club challenged it and the appeal will be considered by the SJFA at Hampden Park on Tuesday, October 31.

Thistle secretary Jim Boyd was reluctant to speak out too much with the appeal in motion but told Sportscene: "We have appealed against the decision and we want the three points back and the two goals reinstated. All I will say is that I was surprised at the decision by the West Region as no evidence was produced by Ardrossan Winton Rovers."

Winton treasurer Willie Kean said: "We have no comment to make."

SJFA secretary, Tom Johnston declined to discuss the matter but confirmed that Ardeer still had the right of appeal to the SFA should they be unsuccessful.

Meanwhile Winton manager Derek Frye was delighted with his side's performance as they came from behind to defeat Forth Wanderers 4-3 away in the Whyte and Mackay West of Scotland Cup first round on Saturday.

He said: "We fully deserved our victory as we played very well in the second half and Scott Adam, who has stepped up from the Under 19's did very well. We have a tough game away to Maybole in the Stagecoach Ayrshire District League on Saturday but if we show the same kind of commitment as the weekend I will be happy."
