Time to Realise our Potential
Winton Manager's Ambition on eve of new Season
AMBITIOUS Ardrossan Winton Rovers boss Derek Frye is calling on his improving young side to realise their potential and make a strong challenge for promotion to the Super First Division as they gear up for Saturday's derby opener against Saltcoats Victoria.
However seasiders boss George Gillon is looking to spring an upset in the intriguing Stagecoach Ayrshire District League clash at Winton Park.
While delighted his side have won the North Ayrshire Cup two seasons running, Frye who misses the weekend game as he is in Malta coaching, has his eye on the big prize.
Frye who will leave coach Derek Cook in charge, said: "We had a great second half of the season, going on a great run and had our earlier form been better who knows what could have happened. But this season we really must make a strong challenge for promotion. This team is in its third year together and we are capable of doing it. We always look forward to the derby games and the aim must be to get three points on Saturday."
Winton still hope to lad transfer listed Kilwinning Rangers striker Stephen Ried, although Sportscene understands they face competition for his signature from Renfrew.
Meanwhile Gillon, who has secured centre half Gordon Minor from amateur side Fenwick Thistle said: "We look forward to the Winton game. I expect they will be favourites for the title this season but we hope to take advantage of Derek (Frye) not being there and will be aiming for the three points."
