Winton, Cups Second

FOCUSED Ardrossan Winton Rovers boss Derek Frye said this week that he would sacrifice moe trophy glory for a place in the Stagecoach Super League after their promotion campaign moved into overdrive on Saturday.

Winton hammered local rivals Irvine Victoria 4-0 at Winton Park to notch their 11th win out of 17 and remain just three points behind leaders Kilwinning Rangers in the Stagecoach Ayrshire District League.

Now he says they want to set a hard target by winning their remaining five games, starting with the visit to Craigmark Burntonians on Saturday, but is not putting added presure on his players.

Frye told Sportscene "I was delighted with the football we played and we will always score goals. Crowds are up this season and people who were there would hopefully enjoy watching us."

"I know we have done well in the past few seasons winning the North Ayrshire Cup three times and while we will not be lying down to anyone in cup competitions this season, we would gladly forego winning a trophy if it meant we could win the marathon and get promotion to the Super League and the committee feel the same way."

"We have five massive cup finals and everyone willl be out to beat us just as Irvine Vics were on Saturday, but if we can win them we will have 48 and that will be a good target to set. Everything is in place off the field for promotion, with the new stand being builf and I really feel we deserve to take the next step."

"It's all very well for Billy (Thomson) at Kilwinning Rangers to say catch us if you can to other teams but I don't want to put added pressure on my players like that, if we don't make it we don't make it. But I know if we play to our capabilities we can get there. It would be a great achievement if we could get promotion."
