Cup is a Relief
PROMOTION chasing Ardrossan Winton Rovers boss Derek Frye admits he will be relieved to escape the rigours of league business on Saturday as his troops make the trip to Ayr to face Super First Division side Whitletts Victoria in the second round of the New Coin Automatics West of Scotland Cup.
The boss was delighted to rack up another three points with the 1-0 weekend win away to Craigmark Burntonians keeping them just three points behind Stagecoach Ayrshire District League leaders Kilwinning Rangers and happy with their overall display.
Winton have now won 12 of their 18 games and look well placed to clinch a Super League spot for the first time.
He said "The result was the important thing for us and we created quite a number of chances so could have won even more easily. But as I said before we have four cup finals left, playing Saltcoats Vics, Ardeer Thistle and Darvel away and Kello Rovers at Winton Park and will be looking to win all of these games. Promotion is the main target and as I have said before if we play to our capabilities we can beat anyone."
Looking ahead to the weekend, Frye said "It will be good to get a wee break from the pressure of the league for a week. We beat Whitletts in the league at Winton Park and drew with them down there last season. They have done very well going up to the Super League. There's always a chance we ccould win but while it would be nice to progress and we look forward to the game, the league still has to be the top priority for us."
Winton have no injury worries to report ahead of the West tie.
