Winton boss rejects speculation linking him to the Glenafton job

ARDROSSAN Winton Rovers boss Derek Frye has rejected speculation linking him with the vacant Glenafton job.

The popular Winton Park manager, who nearly guided the club to promotion from the District League last season, has been mentioned on forums as a tip for the Loch Park hotseat, following Mark Shanks's dismissal.

But Frye told Sportscene this week that he has no intention of leaving Winton and aims to take them to the Super League this year.

Frye said "It's always nice to be mentioned as it shows you are doing something right. But why would I sign all the players who have stuck by me over the last three-four years to just walk away and leave them. That's not the sort of guy I am."

"I'm very happy to be manager of Ardrossan Winton Rovers and promotion is my aim."

Despite the loss of Kei Milliken to Irvine Meadow in the close season, Frye has made a number of new additions, including Scott Houston, Willie Rankine, Robert Nolan and Niall Kennedy.

And he believes he now has a squad capable of promotion to the Super League, after missing out by the narrowest of margins last season.

Frye continued "I'm quite happy with the squad I've got and they are good enough for the league we are in and I believe good enough for the league above as well."

"It was disappointing for everyone to miss out the way we did last year, but I'm certain we have what it takes this time around. We've played well so far in the Ardagh Cup, which is primarily for building up our fitness levels in any case."

"We may have lost 5-0 to Beith, but they are a smashing team who I think will have a great season, and I don't really think 5-0 was a true reflection on how we played."
